CHECK ALL THE BOXES

FINDERS SEEKERS

Why play this way?

In this fun twist on hide and seek, children hunt for a “treasure” while collecting the boxes that will become their play materials. Because they are responsible for finding and examining their boxes, they will feel ownership of, and investment in, the play. We chose boxes for this play because not only do they provide hours of fun and entertainment, but they also promote physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth. We love that boxes can be found everywhere, making the play possibilities accessible, affordable, and basically, effortless.

Let's Play!

SET THE STAGE FOR PLAY: 5 Minutes

Adult Participation: Required

Ready

A collection of 5-10 small empty boxes from around the house (e.g. a shoe, pasta, or Band-Aid box)

One small item that you love (e.g. a figurine or stuffie that will fit in one of your boxes)

Set

Select one box and place your item inside.

Hide ALL of your boxes around the house. (Place the box containing your item in the trickiest spot).

For younger children, choose more visible spots and “hide” the boxes in just one room.

Play!

Now it’s time to find and check all the boxes as you search for your beloved item.

When you find a box, open it, and bring it back to your starting location.

  • Older children can be told how many boxes to find and check.

When you have found the box containing your beloved item and have collected every hidden box, you will have all the materials you need to play.

  • How will you play with your new collection of boxes?
  • Will you stack them, line them up, or, place them inside of each other?
  • How can you incorporate your beloved item into your box play?

Play your way! What else can you do with these open ended materials?

Looking forward to gifting these again!
"I have always gifted books at birthdays and these felt like a natural extension of the gifts I already give. It's nice to also be able to give my friends something that comes with additional activities they may not have thought to do."
