M is for Memory

Guess What's Gone

Why play this way?

M is for...memory! In this playful learning adventure, your little one will make fun and meaningful connections between sounds and words as they gather and explore household items that start with the letter M. This simple guessing game invites phonics practice while challenging your child to remember a group of objects and then figure out what’s missing. Get ready to flex those memory muscles!

Gather a collection of 5-10 items that start with the letter M such as:

  • Mask, Monkey, Mug, Mirror, Measuring Cup, Marker, Magnifying Glass, Muffin, Marshmallow, Mouthwash, Magnet, Mitten, Maze, Map, Milk, Money, Mustard, Mail, Mop, Melon, Moose

Spread out your collection.

  • Take a moment to look closely at each item and say its name out loud.

Cover the entire collection with your blanket.

Play!

Determine who will be Player 1 and who will be Player 2.

Player 1

  • Secretly remove one item. Then, reveal the rest by lifting the blanket.

Player 2

  • Look at the collection and figure out which item is missing!

Continue playing by removing a new item each round.

  • Feel free to switch roles.
  • For a bigger challenge, remove two items.

Take your play on the go!

PRINT these images (in place of your household items).

  • Cut out each image and place them face up on a flat surface.
  • Cover them completely.
  • Secretly remove one image, then reveal the rest.
  • Guess which one is missing!

PRINT two copies to play a more “traditional” memory matching game.

  • Cut out the two sets of images and place them face down, on a flat surface.
  • Take turns revealing two images at a time to try and find the matches.
