Why Play This Way?

When you use your imagination to play, anything can be ANYTHING! This activity invites imaginative play by using a quintessential open-ended material. The humble cardboard box is so simple in form and function that it can become anything from a house, to an airplane, to a secret cave, to a time machine. We would say that the sky’s the limit but since your box just might become a rocketship, there are no limits to where this play will take you. Play this way to enjoy the freedom of invention and to celebrate your little one’s imagination.

SET THE STAGE FOR PLAY: 2 Minutes

Adult Participation: Optional

Ready

One large cardboard box (ideally, that you can climb into)
Art supplies
- Crayons
- Markers
- Stickers
Optional: A box cutter (for adult use only)

SET

Gather your box and materials in an area with lots of open space.

PLAY!

Use your imagination and transform your box just like the Rabbit in Not A Box.

→What exciting adventures or characters will you create?
→Will you put something inside of your box, or, on top?
→Will you push it around or connect it to something else?
→Will you add any details with your art supplies?
→What other materials can you gather for your “not a box?”
Playtime Extensions:

1. Add a Box

- Introduce recycled boxes of varying sizes & shapes (e.g. toothpaste, shoe, cereal, & soap boxes).
  → Create something brand new (e.g. a box of playing cards might be used as a telephone).
  → Use your various boxes like blocks & build with them.

1. Create a Cozy Nook

- Turn a large box on its side and place a soft blanket and/or pillow inside.
- String some twinkle lights inside of the box.
- Cut out a little hole to peek through.
- Cut a rectangular slot for sliding books into your nook.
- Once your new zen place is all set, cozy up inside and read your favorite stories
