SET THE STAGE FOR PLAY: 3 minutes

Adult Participation: Optional

Y IS FOR YARN

Make a homemade loom and get ready to weave in and out

Place several large rubber bands around a cookie tray.

Tape one end of a piece of yarn to the bottom of your tray.

Use the other end of the yarn to weave in, out, over, and through your rubber bands.

Repeat with other pieces and colors of yarn to create an interesting design.

Y-e-s spells yes!

Play this guessing game

Have your little one think of a person, animal, place, or object, and ask them to tell you the category.

Begin asking “yes or no” questions to try to guess their mystery word. For example, “Does your person live in this house?” or “Does your animal have fur?”

  • If the answer to a question is “yes,” your child should nod their head “yes” and make the sound for the letter Y.
  • If the answer is “no”, your child should shake their head “no.”

Continue asking questions until the mystery word is guessed!

Then switch roles and take a turn thinking of a word while your child asks you “yes or no” questions.
