it's a toss up

3-2-1 action!

Why Play This Way?

Bring this book to life by acting out the hilarious antics of Floyd, who keeps getting things stuck in a tree! Your little one will learn about cause and effect while strengthening cognitive skills such as sequencing and recall. Plus, when they experience the joy of full-bodied activities that pull this story off the page, they’re sure to form a deeper connection with the book and its characters.

SET THE STAGE FOR PLAY: 3 Minutes

Adult Participation: Required

Ready

  • Stuck by Oliver Jeffers
  • A large piece of paper
  • Post-it notes
  • Drawing/writing materials
  • A sofa, bed, or another high spot to toss items

SET

  • Draw a large tree outline and tape it to the wall.

3 ways to PLAY!

  1. Re-read (or just look through) the book and name each item as you pretend to throw it into Floyd’s tree.
    • Will they overlap? Do you need to reach up?

  2. On individual post-it notes, draw pictures of the items that got stuck in Floyd’s tree. Have fun sticking these notes onto your tree!
    • Will they overlap? Do you need to reach up high to a branch?
    • Are there other items you want to draw and stick on?

  3. Go on a book-based scavenger hunt to find the same (or similar) objects that Floyd gets stuck in the tree. Then, toss your items into your “tree” (sofa, bed, or other high place) and watch them get stuck!
